Licence terms

RuleFence is free software released under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later. A paid plan buys a commercial licence key for updates, support and scope — it does not restrict the rights the GPL gives you.

Before you rely on this

This document has not been reviewed by a lawyer. Have qualified legal counsel check it against the jurisdictions you sell into before the site goes live.

1. The software licence

The plugin’s PHP, JavaScript, CSS and other code is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 2, or (at your option) any later version. That licence gives you the freedom to run the software for any purpose, study and modify it, and redistribute it — including modified versions — under the same licence.

This applies to every edition. The paid editions are not proprietary software with a different set of rights; they are the same GPL software, distributed to licence holders.

What that means in practice

Nothing on this page takes away a right the GPL grants. Where any term here appeared to conflict with the GPL as applied to the code, the GPL governs the code.

2. What a licence key is

A licence key is a commercial agreement about our services, not a restriction on the software. An active key entitles you, for its term, to:

  • Download and receive updates for the edition you purchased.
  • Install RuleFence Pro, the separate add-on plugin the paid editions are delivered as. It requires the free plugin and is installed alongside it; the free plugin does not contain paid features in a disabled state.
  • Activate the paid edition on the number of sites your plan allows.
  • Use the support channel for your plan.
PlanActivation scopeIntended for
FreeNo key requiredLearning the control path on a site you operate
Pro1 or 5 production sites per key, according to the Pro scope purchasedA production workflow with approvals and evidence
Agency25 sites, or one WordPress Network, per keyGovernance standards across a fleet

Staging and local development copies of a licensed production site do not consume an extra activation.

3. Activation and expiry

Activation sends your licence key, the site URL, and the plugin version to the licence endpoint. Nothing about your agents, permissions, approvals, or audit records is transmitted. See the privacy policy.

When a licence expires or is deactivated:

  • Your site keeps working. The plugin does not disable itself or lock your dashboard.
  • Your data stays where it is — identities, permissions, approvals, and audit records are yours and remain in your database.
  • You stop receiving updates and licensed support, and paid-edition features may become unavailable.
  • Your GPL rights in the version you already have are unaffected.

An unreachable licence server is never treated as a verdict. A network failure will not be interpreted as an invalid licence.

4. Security controls are identical in every edition

Editions differ in operational scale and optional features. They do not differ in security. Native authorization, default deny, approval binding, audit chaining, fail-closed behaviour, and emergency controls are the same in the free edition as in Agency — and the test suite asserts that they stay that way.

We will not move a security control behind a paid plan.

5. What the commercial agreement asks of you

These are contractual commitments about our services, and none of them limits your GPL rights in the code:

  • Do not share or resell your licence key. It identifies your account for updates and support.
  • Do not present a modified build as an official RuleFence release, or use our name and logo in a way that suggests we published or endorsed it.
  • Do not circumvent licence checks in the hosted service.
  • Support covers the software as we distribute it. We cannot support a modified build, though you remain free to make one.

6. Third-party components and assets

The plugin bundles third-party libraries under their own compatible open source licences; each is listed with its licence in the distributed package. Icons used on this website and in the admin interface are used under their respective licences. The RuleFence name and logo are trademarks and are not licensed under the GPL.

7. No warranty

As stated in the GPL, the software is provided without warranty of any kind, to the extent permitted by law. It enforces the boundary you configure, above the boundary WordPress already enforces; it cannot compensate for a permission you chose to grant, an over-privileged WordPress user, or a compromised host.

Our liability for the paid service is limited as set out in the terms of service. Rights you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by agreement are unaffected.

8. Getting the source

The complete corresponding source is the distributed plugin itself — it is interpreted code, not a compiled binary. If you need it in another form, or want the source of a specific released version, write to [email protected] and we will provide it.
